A P-plater has been fined and stripped of his driver's licence for six months after he was clocked travelling at a speed almost double his legal limit on a Riverina highway this week.

Officers from Griffith Highway Patrol detected the 17-year-old red P-plater travelling at high speed while conducting checks on the Kidman Way near Goolgowi about 7.30pm on Monday.
According to police, officers spotted a silver Holden Commodore sedan travelling well in excess of the highway's 100km/h signposted speed limit and clocked the vehicle at 171km/h.
Officers stopped the male driver, who produced a provisional P1 driver's licence with a speed restriction of 90km/h.
Police also observed the vehicle was not displaying P plates.
The teen was issued infringement notices for exceeding the speed limit by more than 45km/h and not displaying P plates.

The vehicle's registration plates were not seized by officers as the driver was not the registered owner.
