Wagga Base Hospital manager of corporate and business services, Michael Morris, said the carpark will "indirectly" free up additional parking spaces for hospital patients and visitors.

An additional 150 car parks for staff will also be opened next year, and construction on the hospital's multi-story car park will commence next week.

"With the site being [an] ongoing development since 2014 car parking has been fairly scarce," Mr Morris said.

"Our focus has always been making sure that our consumers - the patients and visitors - have car parking, so it's meant a lot of the staff have had to park in the streets around the hospital."

There are around 1000 staff members on-site in Wagga with "quite a few hundred" travelling by car to work each day.

Mr Morris said this project will not only provide additional parking spaces for them, but safer parking, being at close proximity to the hospital and having boom gates installed.

The car park will officially open at 5am on Saturday, and Mr Morris said it will "indirectly" open up more parking spaces for patients and visitors at the hospital.

"Some staff did chose to park in the two-hour parking and then move their cars, so there [will be] less need to do that, but we're being very vigilant still on reviewing our two-hour and one-hour parking so we have availability for the consumers," he said.

The additional 150 staff parking spaces due to open next year will be constructed where the old dental clinic used to be near Rawson Lane and Docker Street.

Mr Morris said that work has already commenced on this, and the number of car spaces was based around what the maximum capacity was for carparks the hospital can provide.

"Overall we'll have over 900 spaces at the hospital once we finish the multi-story car park, which will be finished later in 2022," he added.

The multi-story car park is the last stage of the hospital development, and will feature solar panels on the top level, almost acting as a roof.

Mr Morris said when construction begins next week it should have "minimal" impact on road users, with only slight changes to Doris Roy Lane.
