Kyle Murray arrived at the house in his girlfriend's car - she shouted encouragement from the driver's seat - over an earlier incident involving her mother.

"Kill him, kill him, smash him up," the woman screamed at Murray, whose actions prompted his victim to arm himself with a vacuum cleaner tube.

Albury Local Court heard on Tuesday that Murray had already swung the machete at the other man up to nine times.

He blocked each strike, though suffered lacerations to his hands, fingers and arms.

The events from that afternoon, on August 13, 2020, had Murray front court via a video link to jail.

Murray, 22, pleaded guilty to using an offensive weapon to commit an indictable offence, reckless wounding in company and have custody of an offensive weapon in a public place.

Defence lawyer Bronte Winn submitted to magistrate Richard Funston that an appropriate sentence might be full-time jail, with a non-parole period covering the four months he had spent in custody, or an intensive corrections order.

Ms Winn said Murray had suffered from mental health issues since the deaths of his sister in 2009 and his mother in 2015.

The court was told a separate police investigation was instigated over an incident about 4pm that same day where the victim and the mother of Murray's girlfriend had "an altercation".

Twenty minutes later, Murray and his partner got in her car and drove from their Redlands Road home to the victim's Hall Street home.

After Murray attacked, the victim grabbed him in a bear hug.

Murray then hit him in the back with the machete before the victim got him in a headlock.

Each man threw punches and the machete spilled to the ground.

After he got it back, Murray stood outside the front gate waving the machete about, trying to entice a woman who also lived there to come towards him.

Murray was sentenced to a 12-month intensive corrections order.
