After scoring three tries in their big grand final win over Tumut, Mathew Lyons is heading off to Queensland.
The damaging ball runner has secured a train and trial contract with Queensland Cup outfit Sunshine Coast Falcons, but it is family commitments which sends the 22-year-old north of the border.
"It's a bit of a change and the move is exciting," Lyons said. "I didn't really plan on moving up there but my son is moving to the Gold Coast so I didn't really want to stay in Wagga.
"I got onto (coach) Ryan Hoffman and asked him if I could start training with the Falcons.
"I'm just going up there on a train and trial but I'll just back myself."
Linking with the club out of the Canberra Raiders development system, Lyons was the main strike weapon for the Tigers at either centre or fullback for the past two seasons.
The Southcity junior was set for another season with the premiers before his change of plans.
Co-coach Luke Berkrey, who just edged out Lyons for man of the match honours in the grand final, admitted it is a big loss for the club.
"He will be a big loss as he does some things on the field that no one else in Group Nine can do," Berkrey said.
"He's a huge loss in that way as he's a real strike weapon."
However Gundagai aren't looking to bring in a new replacement.
Instead they will back their depth to try to fill the void.
"We won't be going out to try to find someone to replace Matty as a bloke like him is probably irreplaceable," Berkrey said.
"We've got some really good 18s coming through and our reserve grade have been premiers three of the last four years so there is plenty of stock here."
Regardless Gundagai are set to have almost a carbon copy of the team who scored a 40-18 win in the decider.
Lyons is the only confirmed departure while Taholo Aisea is yet to decide his future.
The Group Nine season will start on April 10 with a grand final rematch with Tumut penciled in.
