After being beaten with favourites in the first three Breeders Challenge Regional heats they tasted success with Rocknroll Runa in the two-year-old colts and geldings division.
Painting was pleased with how Rocknroll Runa finished off, zipping home in a last half 54.2 seconds.
"He went super," Painting said.
"Dave has changed a little bit of stuff with his feet and he steered pretty much spot on and you can't get home much quicker than what he did then so we are all back on target and he will take a lot of beating in the final."
Cherokee Joe provided the stable with a quinella.

RIVERINA hopefuls have mixed draws in the Breeders Crown semi-finals.
After winning her heat at Bendigo on Friday, defending champion Maajida has drawn 11 in her three-year-old fillies semi at Melton on Saturday.
However Jacks Hawk has come up with barrier one in his two-year-old colts and geldings semi.
Both are trained by Emma Stewart.
After being passed in at the sales, Jake Stockton is now pleased he and partner Jessica Francis kept hold of the son of Art Major with a win in his heat.
"His (Jacks Hawk) only bad run he had excuses - he was actually sore - and one galloped in front of him in the Tatlow and he got beat on protest so really he's won three out of his four starts," Stockton said.
"They've got a really big opinion of him, they think he's a nice horse and he's in with a chance for sure."
Former Riverina pacer Loorrim Lake, who has now won eight straight, has drawn seven in his three-year-old colts and geldings semi-final.

JESSICA Prior scored her first win as a trainer at start two.
Dance Baby Dance was able to lead all the way to hold off a fast-finishing Sporty Dancer at Griffith on Saturday.
It was the mare's second start for Prior after missing ninth in her first run in the region last month.
Prior was pleased to get off the mark quickly.
"It is something I've dreamt of to win quickly as a trainer," Prior said.
Bayley Duck is another new member of the Riverina training ranks after having his first two runners at Wagga on Tuesday.
He was placed on both occasions.

Lets Katchmeifucan has drawn six in the final on Saturday while Junee-owned pacer Mister Donald, who is also trained by Cross, has drawn three after finishing third in his heat last week.
