Waterhouse has only ever had the one runner at Gundagai but will be looking to take out the iconic $100,000 Snake Gully Cup (1400m) for the first time alongside training partner Adrian Bott.
The Waterhouse-Bott stable confirmed Regal Stage is a definite starter on Friday after the last-start Randwick winner was given 57 kilograms for the Gundagai assignment.
Albury Gold Cup winner Spunlago attracted the top weight of 62.5 kilograms, narrowly ahead of the Kurt Goldman-trained Intuition with 62kg.
Winona Costin has been booked to ride Regal Stage and the Waterhouse-Bott stable found the Snake Gully Cup the right option for the horse.
"I think being a $100,000, it seemed like a suitable race for us. A winnable race as well," stable sales and bloodstock manager Claudia Miller said.
"He won impressively last start in city company over 1400, he's a very fit horse, he's got great form over 1400, we just thought it would be a fun contest for him."
Miller confirmed the popular nature of the Gundagai carnival added to the appeal for the Waterhouse-Bott stable.
"His owners are actually a really good group. They love to target the Cups, whether it be the Caulfield Cup or the Snake Gully Cup, either or," Miller said.
Regal Stage will be looking to enjoy the biggest win of his career to date. He broke through for a midweek city win last start and his first three victories before that were at provincial level.
Spunlago and Sky Call are the only two Southern District representatives guaranteed of a start in Friday's feature.
The Doctor's Son should get a start for John Whitelaw, while Bezos and hometown hope Thistledo will need some luck to sneak their way into the final field of 12.
Snake Gully Cup day is almost sold out with the club expecting a crowd of up to 1200 to attend despite COVID-19 restrictions.
Racing continues on Saturday with the Hair of the Dog Cup.
