Senior seismologist for Geoscience Australia, Hadi Ghasemi, said the first of the earthquakes was reported at 8.47pm Saturday.

"That initial earthquake registered a magnitude of 2.4, followed by a second two hours later, measuring 2.0," he said.

According to Dr Ghasemi, there have been roughly 50 earthquakes of a similar magnitude within a 100km radius of Barmedman since 2010.

"This is quite a lot, so the two earthquakes Saturday night were not out of the ordinary," he said.

"People close to the epicentre would have been able to feel some kind of movement, particularly given it was at night time and with everyone in isolation so things are a lot quieter and our senses to motion are heightened."
