The Eastern Riverina zone championships at Jubilee Park were the first step on the representative ladder.
Among the standout performances were three record-breaking efforts from Kooringal-Wagga Club athletes.
Alexander Yongai set a new boys under 11 discus record, throwing 28.98m, eclipsing the old mark of 28.83m.
Kippy Langat’s 300m hurdles time of 43.34 seconds smashed the old under 15 boys record of 48.26s.
And racewalker Hannah Mison set a new record in the under 17's 1500m walk. Her time of 7 minutes, 31.20 seconds was more than four seconds under the old time.
A host of athletes had big days out but none better than Claudia Wheatley from the Wagga Little Athletics Club who claimed six gold medals in six events – the under 14 girls 100m, 200m, 400m, high jump, long jump and triple jump.
