Competing in the open mens B division, Vipers wasted no time finding the chalk with a ruthless display on Friday, scoring 26 tries in three games to top their pool undefeated.
Saturday’s round of championship pool fixtures didn’t go as well with Easts Roosters inflicting Vipers’ first loss of the tournament but two strong wins over Wests Magpies and Sydney University had Wagga back in pole position for Sunday’s finals series.
A 6-5 win over Bankstown then cemented Vipers’ spot in the championship semi finals before their campaign was cruelly cut short by Parramatta.
Vipers veteran Brocke Argus said the earlier loss to Easts took away vital momentum.
“Obviously it’s a bit of a downed losing to Easts like that but that’s what you get with carnivals,” Argus said.
“You can’t win all of them but as long as you’re in and competing, you can still get a good result.”
Argus backed the side to go one better next year.
“We’ve got a pretty good bunch together and it’s been a pretty similar squad the past few years now,” he said.
“We didn’t take the biscuits this time around but we’re not too far off, I reckon.”
The open mens B division grand final was eventually won by UNSW Bullets, who edged Parramatta 7-6.
