At about 2am, emergency services were called to a vacant property on Toy Place.
Turvey Park Fire Station Commander Chad Kennis said when they arrived at the scene, the house was already “engulfed in fire”.
“Flames were alight through the roof,” Mr Kennis said.
“We determined quickly that the house was vacant and took defensive firefighting strategies.”
It took about two hours for firefighters to extinguish the fire.
Mr Kennis said crews had been called to smaller fires at the premise in the past.
“It’s being treated as suspicious [by police],” he said.
“There were no injuries to crew members or neighbours.”
Wagga police Chief Inspector Andrew Spliet said the incident was concerning for authorities and the community.
“We’ve received some information that there were a number of people seen at the scene prior to the fire,” Chief Inspector Spliet said.
“It’s concerning for us that people would be endangering people’s lives by setting fire to a house.
“At this stage, it appears to be a suspiciously lit fire.”
Investigations continue.
Anyone with information about this incident is urged to contact Wagga Police Station on 6922 2599 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
