Cootamundra have been struck another blow with Haydn Cowled returning to Young.
Cowled came back to his junior club for the 2018 season, but like some many of the Bulldogs recruits will be elsewhere next year.
He’s linked back with the Cherrypickers, who we spent the 2016 and 2017 seasons with.
New Young coach Roy Jewitt is more than happy to have him back on board.
“Haydn is going to be good,” Jewitt said.
“He’s got a good attitude, he’s going to be good fun and he can certainly play the game.
“He’s going to be massive for us.”
Young have also welcomed back Jayke Hogan who spent the season with Harden.
Both second rowers will give Young more depth.
After a string of finals appearances, the Cherrypickers narrowly avoided the wooden spoon last season but Jewitt believes both will help the club get back on track.
Young’s forward pack has been the strength of the side and the returning faces will only boost their existing stock.
After misfiring last season, Jewitt wants to change their approach.
“You don’t play on paper, but on paper you look at what they did have and it was surprising and probably disappointing with the way they did perform,” he said.
“But I want to change the way they play and play to their strengths.
“Hopefully it will improve a couple of areas and get them enjoying it again.”
Jewitt wants the side to adopt a more attacking style.
“I don’t want to sit there and just watch them bash it up all day or get tackled by three blokes and try and get a quick play-the-ball but they can’t as they got bashed,” he said.
“I want them to be able to pass at the line, pass at the tackle and just play some football and get the defence in two minds.”
And with two forwards secured now he’s looking to add to their back line.
Strikepower out wide hasn’t been the club’s strength and it’s something Jewitt is looking to balance better.
“That is probably why it has been a forward orientated game as we haven’t always had the back line,” he said.
Young had their first pre-season hit out on Monday night.
About 20 players, mostly seniors were in attendance, pleasing Jewitt.
