The Phantoms threw four second grade regulars into the mix against the undefeated Tahs after a number of key forwards, including Marika Vunibaka, were ruled out by work commitments.
“We were really proud of the effort from our first grade team and I thought our forward pack held the Tahs well at home,” Phantoms president Tim Allen said.
“We were leading at half time as well and our backs are still scoring plenty of tries, so there’s plenty of positives to take out of it.”
Leeton could also welcome back first grade skipper Tim Rolls as early as next week after the hooker made a successful return from injury in second grade last weekend.
Rolls was sidelined for three weeks with injury and will be assessed on Thursday ahead of Saturday’s clash with Ag College.
“He had a run at flanker last weekend and went alright, but we’re trying to bring him back slowly,” Allen said.
“We’ll make a call on Timmy at training this week.”
Rolls would be a handy bonus against the hard-nosed Aggies, who are currently riding a five-game winning streak.
“They stuck it to us for about 60 minutes last time around … and I know they’ll be tough again this time in Wagga,” Allen said.
