Rural Fire Service operational business manager Jenifer Bucknell said a fuel tanker was driving north through Koorawatha towards Cowra when it "came to grief off the road and into a tree".
"It involved fire brigades from our South West Slopes zone and ours," she said.
"When the call came through, the driver had got out of the cabin safely, which was lucky for him.
"Given it was raining and there was no dry vegetation, our crews were only there for a little while to extinguish the fire."
IN OTHER NEWS:
Ms Bucknell said it was a "lucky escape" for the driver considering the truck contained hazardous material.
She said the scene was handed over to Fire and Rescue NSW and police after crews put out the fire.
The Olympic Highway was closed in both directions about a kilometre north of Koorawatha for about an hour before stop/slow traffic control was put in to allow vehicles to pass the crash site one direction at a time.
Both lanes were opened again at about 9.30pm on Thursday.
Ms Bucknell urged any drivers out on the road to take care, especially with the wet weather.
"Normally, motor vehicle accidents are about 10 per cent of what we are called to in a year," she said.
"At the moment, it would be about a third.
"The relaxing of the COVID restrictions have certainly increased the number of motor vehicle crashes we have seen."
