About 12.15pm on Saturday, emergency services rushed to Holbrook Road, near Paper Forest Road, at Mangoplah after reports a vehicle had crashed.
Police said it is believed the driver of the Mitsubishi Triton was travelling north when the vehicle left the road and hit a tree.
The driver, a 28-year-old man, was treated at the scene for non-life-threatening injuries and taken to Wagga Base Hospital.
The man's passenger, a six-year-old boy, died at the scene.
Inspector David Vine from NSW Ambulance said it was a difficult scene for first responders, as well as for the passers-by who tried to help while waiting for paramedics and police.
