The Base Warehouse plans to open its doors on November 1 in the premises which Spotlight previously leased at the Home Base centre at Hammond Avenue.
Owner Peter Zafiropoulos said the store's opening had been delayed between four to six weeks because of lockdowns.
IN OTHER NEWS:
He said he had targeted Wagga as it possessed a large number of potential customers and has shown his commitment by investing $2 million in the total set-up costs.
"That's one of the reasons we targeted Wagga, going to the biggest country town, playing the numbers game," he said.
"We are a discount variety store, mainly with a large range of homewares, that's our big specialty.
"We put a lot of our energy into that environment and our party area is another big category.
"There will also be a variety of essential hardware and kitchenware goods.
"It's very important to note that we stock the same range as the metropolitan stores and the pricing is the exact same even though there are extra delivery costs with Wagga."
Knight Frank, the property and leasing managers of Home Base, as well as Kooringal Mall, Sturt Mall, Southcity and Homebase, negotiated the long term lease with the new business.
Its director Jill Toohey believes that attracting The Base Warehouse to the 2500 square-metre premises would be a welcome addition to the Homebase centre.
"It's a good news story for Wagga with this new large-scale retail business committing to open in regional New South Wales during uncertain times," Mrs Toohey said.
"We're very excited to be getting a new national retailer.
"Spotlight vacated in July and we had already secured The Base Warehouse to lease this space.
"It's just been restrictions on travel and trade with COVID-19 that they've had to navigate, so realistically the building hasn't been vacant for an extended time."
Mr Zafiropoulos said there would be about 15 staff members in the store at any one time and is on the hunt for employees.
"Overall, we'll be looking for about 40 to 50 full-time, part-time and casual staff," he said.
"At any one time there will be about 15 staff in the store.
