Man, woman charged after police pursuits between Wagga and Temora

About 9.30pm on Sunday, highway patrol officers were travelling west along Red Hill Road at Tolland when they observed a stolen Ford Territory heading in the opposite direction.

Officers attempted to stop the car and when the driver allegedly failed to do so, a pursuit was initiated.

The pursuit lasted 30 minutes through various suburbs in Wagga and had to be terminated for safety reasons.

A second pursuit began when the vehicle was spotted about 30 minutes later, which Wagga police Detective Chief Inspector Winston Woodward said lasted for a couple of hours.

When the chase reached Grants Lane near Temora, the driver allegedly rammed into a fence and drove through a paddock before driving into a dam.

The 37-year-old male driver and 26-year-old female passenger ran from the vehicle, but were arrested and taken to Wagga police station.

It will be alleged in court that during the incident the car drove towards a police vehicle and narrowly missed it.

Inquiries established that the vehicle had been stolen from Cootamundra on September 7.

The man was charged with multiple offences, including three counts of police pursuit - not stop - drive dangerously. He was refused bail to appear at Wagga Local Court on Monday.

The woman was charged with being carried in conveyance taken without consent of owner.

She was granted conditional bail and is due to appear at Wagga Local Court on October 27.

Inspector Woodward said people who drive above the limit and try to avoid police put both members of the public and officers in danger.
