About 6am at Kooringal Mall, a man entered a cigarette shop armed with a small axe, and after intimidating the worker, escaped with cash and cigarettes.
Detective Chief Inspector Winston Woodward said the armed robber was wearing dark clothing and face coverings.
"He ran off, down a rear lane, and we are now canvassing for CCTV and witnesses to come forward," he said.
