He backed it up with a bronze medal in the individual final.
In what was described as a "masterful ride by the pair", Hoy, 62, helped bring home a silver medal after a clear showjumping round and was fourth going into the individual final.
He went clear to be the only competitor to finish on their dressage score.
Teammates Kevin McNab (the reserve after Stuart Tinney's horse was ruled out with an infection) went clear and under time (on Don Quidam) while Shane Rose (aboard Virgil) brought down a rail, leaving Australia in a nail-biting position against the French, who went on to secure the bronze while Great Britain claimed gold.
It was Hoy who once again brought the team home after a masterful display of riding aboard Vassily de Lassos during Sunday's gruelling cross-country phase.
In his record-breaking eighth Olympics Games, Hoy added to his three team gold medals and individual silver.
His last medals were won at the Sydney Games in 2000.
Great Britain won the team gold but Oliver Townsend dropped a rail to miss out on a second medal and elevate Hoy into bronze.
Germany's Julia Krajewski created history after being the first woman to win the individual gold.
After picking up 0.40 time faults, she finished 3.30 penalties ahead of Great Britain's Tom McEwen.
McEwen denied Hoy a second silver by 0.30 penalties.
Commentator Lucinda Green remarked Hoy "makes history every time he rides" and there is no doubt this equestrian veteran has secured his place in the annals of Olympic history.
