Council's 'Coolamon Road Fatal Crash Response' will see state traffic experts review the road where it crosses Houlaghans Creek Bridge to the north of Wagga.
Council's operations director Warren Faulkner yesterday flagged the $90,000 safety audit, which has a 12-month time attached to the funding.
Mr Faulkner said council had applied to the Centre for Road Safety to secure a grant from Transport for NSW.
It comes after a horror two-car crash at the bridge in February that killed a 44-year-old Mount Austin man.
Mr Faulkner said this was the third fatality at the site in the past five years, which prompted council's call for the investigation.
He said the road safety audit should should point out any deficiencies there as well as the best way to mitigate them, including potential tree clearing and improved line marking
He didn't rule out more major upgrades including the realignment of the road and potential bridge widening, though he said he would wait to be guided by the results of the audit.
Whatever the results of the investigation, council will need to apply for further grant funding to undertake those works in the future.
"If it's simple stuff, like some tree clearing, and environmental approvals go through, then [it would be] pretty quick the action," Mr Faulkner said.
"But if it's getting into more detail, geometry of curves and things like that, then you've got to come up with a design and I would think we'd probably be looking at 12 to 24 months in that location."
