About 6.30am on April 11, a 46-year-old woman walked outside a unit on Kokoda Street, Ashmont, after hearing noises.
Police have been told the woman was assaulted by three unknown people, who forced her back inside and smashed the front window.
The group demanded money from a second occupant, a 68-year-old man, before hitting him over the head and torso with a shovel.
It's further alleged the woman was forced onto a mattress in the lounge room, before her bag was stolen.
The trio fled the scene and were last seen heading west on Kokoda Street, before turning south on Tarakan Avenue.
Riverina Police District Detective Inspector Adrian Telfer, said police are using all their resources to identify those responsible.
He said it was a terrifying ordeal for the victims.
"It's an enormous invasion of their privacy and quite confronting particularly at 6.30 in the morning," he said.
"Obviously they are extremely concerned. Police were notified and have been investigating ever since."
As police continue their inquiries, they have released CCTV footage of three people who may be able to assist with their inquiries.
