Emergency services were called to a property on Toopuntul Road, Maude, about 50 kilometres west of Hay at about 12pm.

The male pilot, who was the sole occupant of the helicopter, died at the scene.

Boyong cattle station, along with Juanbung station, was sold in 2019 to The Nature Conservancy organisation's Australian branch to protect the Great Cumbung Swamp from any future development.

"On Wednesday afternoon we learned the tragic news that a helicopter pilot had passed away following a helicopter crash at a property in the Riverina, NSW," The Nature Conservancy's statement said.

"Our thoughts are with his family, his loved ones and his co-workers at this time.

"We are awaiting the results of the investigation on the ground."

The Australian Transport Safety Bureau has dispatched a team of investigators to the crash site, where it appears a Robinson R22 helicopter collided with terrain.
