The Ashmont resident, who asked to remain anonymous out of concern for his safety, said he has always been conscious about locking everything up, even when he is home.
"On Saturday afternoon, I was inside doing things and realised I had not brought groceries in," he told The Daily Advertiser.
"I was only walking out to the car, which was only two minutes, and I came through the back door to get my washing.
"This kid - who looked to be a teenager - was holding my wallet racing out the front, and I was a bit slow getting a hold of him."
Luckily, the man said he had his phone on him, but his wallet contained about $500 and his identification.
He added that the police were extraordinarily efficient and had already followed up with him more than once.
But the incident has left him feeling extremely angry.
"It's just sickening," he said.
"Your house is supposed to be your castle, and you should be allowed to live in peace.
IN OTHER NEWS:
"They pick older people because it's the easier target. I think a lot of elderly people live in fear. What chance have you got if young people break in?"
The 76-year-old said at this point, he just wants his wallets and cards returned after already having difficulty trying to cancel them through the bank.
"I am 76, and I don't understand computers. I don't understand the apps," he said.
"The bank will be getting an earful. It's just not good enough.
"Of course, I would like the money back, but if they at least had the decency to return the wallet, it would save me a lot of hassle."
The Ashmont resident wanted to warn people to watch out and lock up and see anything suspicious to call the police.
"Leave nothing unlocked even for a couple of minutes," he said. "Something needs to be done, but I don't know what."
