The Englishman has been acting captain with both Jarrod Croker and Josh Hodgson on the sidelines but admitted the playing group was blindsided by his compariot's decision to step down.
Whitehead has been adjusting to the role, having joined Croker as co-captain two weeks ago, but the change was only officially announced on Wednesday.
Whitehead doesn't expect it will alter his role too much.
"Nothing really changes for me, I just get on with my job and probably just have to talk a little bit more," Whitehead said.
"At the moment with Jarrod and Hodgy stepping down I've been appointed co-captain alongside him but will lead us out on Saturday and will just be doing my job like I do every week."

The Raiders are looking to snap a four-game winless streak that has seen them slip out of the top eight.
The change of leadership has been just one of the off-field distractions from the club, with Hodgson linked with a move away from the club and halfback George Williams homesick, but Whitehead just wants to focus on getting a win in Wagga.
"We had a good talk on Monday about the stuff that is being leaked but we're all positive and have the confidence and belief we can turn our season around this week," he said.
"We've trained really hard, had a really good preparation and have been really looking forward to getting up here together and hopefully put a performance in."
Whitehead was part of the Raiders victory at Wagga in 2019 and after receiving a big reception back in the city on Thursday, the 31-year-old hopes the trip can spark a much-needed win.
"It's going to be a few good days up here for us," Whitehead said. "Obviously the last couple of weeks haven't been the best for us and we need to fix that up.
"Hopefully this week it's what we do but it is going to be a tough ask against Newcastle who are in a similar spot to us. They've lost a few games on the bounce as well so it is going to be a good game as there is going to be a big crowd there and hopefully they help us get the win."
