Recovery Camp is an Illawarra based social enterprise running an evidence-based adventure program for people with lived experiences of various mental health conditions.
Dr Christopher Patterson, co-founder and specialist mental health nurse and lecturer, said it all began in 2013 to empower people to impact the health system.
He added they were excited to bring it to Wagga, as it would be their first regional camp.
"The challenges of Covid-19 have increased demand for support services everywhere with regional areas often the slowest to receive help," Dr Patterson said.
IN OTHER NEWS:
"We saw the easing of COVID19 restrictions as an opportunity to explore new regional areas of NSW.
"We have long wanted to make connections with other communities, so we're looking forward to connecting with Wagga and having it as the first site to run a camp in South- West NSW."
Dr Patterson said the program involved two main groups: nursing students and those with lived experiences of mental health, including depression, bipolar, and schizophrenia.
"The people with lived experience really become the educator," he said.
"Students have to do their clinical placement, and that's predominantly been in hospitals and - although relevant to their later work - what they get is a very specific focus on what mental health is.
"They miss out on the various people who are out in the community, so Recovery Camp is a chance to change that."
Dr Patterson explained that the camp is a supportive "challenge by choice" environment where everyone has a role, which builds confidence and camaraderie.
Activities can include flying fox, trivia, giant swing, rock climbing, archery, tai chi, bush dancing, craft and more.
The Recovery Camp will be held for the first time at Borambola Sport and Recreation Centre from April 12 to 16.
The program is a registered provider of the NDIS for psychosocial recovery programs. For more information, please, go to www.recoverycamp.com.au.
