In Wagga, Friday's forecast sees a 90 per cent chance of between 20 and 35 millimetres of rain, with an 80 per cent chance of 15 to 30 millimetres on Saturday.
BOM NSW meteorologist Helen Kirkup said damaging wind gusts, heavy rainfall and large hail were all possible during the predicted storms, with intense rain possibly causing flash flooding.
BOM Wagga's Nigel Smedley said the thunderstorms were predicted to begin on Friday afternoon, with conditions easing around lunchtime on Saturday.
He said the storms were caused by a low pressure system moving through Western NSW.
The forecast comes after Wagga doubled its average rainfall in January, a feat which could be repeated in just the first week of February.
Mr Smedley said Wagga had already received 14.4 millimetres, with this month's average sitting at 40.2.
"If we get these good falls tomorrow and Saturday we could reach our average, even go over our February average," he said.
Mr Smedley said the weather would clear Sunday, with a much more stable week predicted from next Monday.
Official thunderstorm warnings will be issued at bom.gov.au/nsw/warnings.
