Turvey Park Fire and Rescue were called to the former Masters building on Hammond Avenue just after 7.30am on Thursday morning after a fire sprinkler was damaged during construction works.
The sprinkler triggered the building's entire fire system despite there being no fire or emergency situation, setting off sprinklers and calling emergency services.
No injuries were reported at the scene, with Turvey Park and Wagga brigades providing backup to assist with the cleanup.
Site foreman Stephen Wakeling said he was grateful for the crews for their assistance.
Mid last year, building owner HomeCo announced its intention to open a shopping complex in the building in 2021.
