Are Doubleyou ($6.50) is on the fourth line of betting, but Wheatley was impressed by how he made ground late from the back despite being devoid of early luck in last week's heats.
The Ellen Bartley-trained Nowhere Creek won that heat, and with leading driver Blake Jones booked has been installed a $3.50 favourite.
"He was a victim of circumstances (in the heat), he got a fair way back. He was pretty wide on the home turn and he still made ground, which I was very pleased with," Wheatley said.
"He should be up there (looking for the lead). He just needed a bit more luck the other night, but we'll see how the final goes.
"Whatever Blake Jones drives usually goes pretty good and James McPherson's got a drive in it (So Much Better, $21).
"Jordan (Seary) rode him (Are Doubleyou) last time, he's a Junee boy and knows the track which isn't that easy.
Wheatley said each way odds is about his right price, but remains optimistic he can pull a surprise and follow in Owneroperator's footsteps.
"Any of these big races around here you like to win," he said.
"But a few of the others are entitled to be shorter prices than mine. Mine's only won four races (from 34 starts)."
