After drawing barrier 15 jockey Brad Stewart was unable to find a chance to slot in, but the $21 hope found the line well to finish fifth, just under a length behind victor Animate.
The $6,250 cheque ultimately justified the long trek across the border for Wagga trainer Colvin, but he can't help reflecting on what could have been.
"His chances were ruined by the barrier a bit, it's disappointing in that regard," he said.
"We tried and he raced great he was just three wide throughout and that was it. He got home pretty well and I was very happy with his run.
"We came a long way to have a crack at a race like that and to get a wide draw is frustrating. But that's the way racing goes sometimes unfortunately."
Forever Newyork has hit his best form after dealing with a persistent hoof injury, and Colvin thinks he'll be competitive in April's Town Plate.
"He'll have another couple of runs to get him ready for the Town Plate," he said.
"I thought about it (keeping him on Gold Coast for another race), but we thought we'd give him a break at home.
"He's a bit more highly rated now after that run, so it should get him into that (Town Plate) field."
