Debutant Joe Martin took a smart catch off his own bowling to secure the 10-run win over Wagga RSL at Wagga Cricket Ground on Saturday.
Lake Albert had plenty of contributors in their batting innings but struggled to make the Bulldogs pay as they finished at 7-173.
However it proved to be more than enough as Wagga RSL suffered another loss to see the race for third and fourth tighten ahead of the new year.
Lake Albert captain Isaac Cooper thought it was an ideal way to head into the Christmas break.
"We had 17 unavailabilities on the weekend as a club so to be able to fight for a win in first grade was an outstanding Christmas present," Cooper said.
Especially after a number of changes to their bowling attack.
The Bulls also lost Rowan Hoare to a quadriceps issue while batting and Tom Doig didn't bowl due to a back injury.
However Martin made the most of his call up after Nathan Brookes pulled out of the side.
Cooper was thrilled with how he helped finish off RSL after a fast start from Ethan Perry (47).
"We found it a bit of a tough wicket to bat on so we were pretty happy with 173, we would have liked a few more, but in the end we got there," he said.
"We bowled rubbish up front but pegged it back it was a good display."
The Bulldogs now haven't won their last four matches and while they remain in third place only six points separates the four teams chasing two finals places.
