Fire and Rescue NSW outlined a list of key things to check before heading off on a holiday in a 'home on wheels'.
The first, and most essential, tip is to have a working fire alarm installed in the vehicle close to sleeping quarters. Additionally, consider having a fire extinguisher and fire blanket nearby.
Before towing a caravan, ensure all pilot lights are switched off, and always have a portable radio accessible to stay up to date with weather warnings and other emergency communications.
Cooking in a caravan is also a risk to sparking fires, which is why people must not cook inside a tent, or leave cooking unattended. It is also important to keep gas cylinders outside, and keep the valve pointed away from the van.
Upon arrival at a campsite, it is recommended to get familiar with fire escape routes and plans, and to locate any emergency equipment on site in case it is needed.

When lighting campfires, it is also importance to do so downwind and away from tents, ensuring any lanterns and campfires are extinguished before going to bed.
Fire and Rescue NSW have a simple rule in case a fire does spark, which is to 'get out, stay out' and call Triple Zero immediately.
Develop a fire escape plan, even if it is a small space, and always test a smoke alarm before hitting the road.
