Colts proved too good for Lake Albert in an action-packed clash at Rawlings Park on Saturday.
The early stages of the clash were delayed after Lake Albert captain Isaac Cooper and teammate Josh Coyte collided in the field.
Cooper was taken away by ambulance while Coyte took no further part in the clash with Bruce Tom coming in as a concussion substitute.
It reduced both team's innings to 46 with Colts making 8-214.
Andrew Dutton top scored with 70 for Kooringal with Hanigan next best on 44.
Rhauri McLeod (49) got Lake Albert off to a flying start while Adam Newcombe (44) was another strong contender but with Hanigan snaring 3-27 they fell short of the target after being bowled out for 183.
Hanigan was thrilled with the breakthrough.
"To get the win was very pleasing," Hanigan said.
"We had to fight for a win and in the end we got it.
"We played some pretty good cricket."
After four losses and three wash outs in the first seven rounds, Hanigan believes the result is crucial for their chances to make the top four.
They are currently four points adrift of St Michaels with a clash against Wagga City to come before the Christmas break.
"Our season was on the line and if we lost I don't think we could have come back from that," Hanigan said.
"Getting that win just gives us that extra motivation to keep going."
