Vice president Peter McCarthy admitted there was a disappointing turnout.
However he hopes securing a captain-coach will help the club move forward.
"If we can get a coach I think we will get the players," McCarthy said.
"I think they are just waiting to see who is coaching."
McCarthy didn't want to reveal the exact numbers but said there was not a lot was even with a number of apologies.
Junee are ideally looking to bring in a new figure to the club to lead them forward.
Especially after winning just one game in the shortened season last year with a team packed full of late additions to the club.
"The last few years we've had locals and it hasn't really worked," McCarthy said.
"It doesn't help when you are getting beaten too and with an 18-round comp next year it is even going to be harder keeping people motivated if you are getting beat.
"I don't think it is good times in Group Nine."
The Diesels will meet on Wednesday to discuss their options.
However McCarthy is hopeful they might be in a position to reveal a coach by then.
Cootamundra have signalled their intention to join the George Tooke Shield next year but Junee doesn't believe it is an option that would suit them.
However they are considering the possibility of approaching Group Nine about only entering a reserve grade, leaguetag and Weissel Cup sides.
"(George Tooke) is just too far for us to travel," McCarthy said.
"It makes sense and I can see why they are doing it as they don't want to stay in the competition and get a hiding every week, which might happen to us.
"Even if we do get a coach and players it doesn't mean we are going to win as I think everyone is going to be pretty strong."
If they head down that path they would need the approve of their rival clubs.
Junee is also expecting an influx of talent linked with the abattoirs but do not want to rely on that coming through.
