The Cats took on the win on Duckworth-Lewis after Lake Albert only faced 22 overs at Rawlings Park on Saturday.
However it was enough to constitute a match, the only of the three first grade fixtures to see a result after heavy rain fell.
Wagga City shook up their batting order with Tom Burge moving to opener with captain Josh Thompson slipping well down their line up.
The move worked with Burge posting 37 in an 89-run stand with Ben Turner (36).
Jon Nicoll provided the bulk of the Cats' runs, with the competition's leading runscorer making 75 as they posted 241.
Thompson was pleased with how the changes played out.
"It was a good opportunity to give Burgey a go at the top of the order and he did well," Thompson said.
"I think you have to do that this season - try to give everyone a hit - and he helped set a good total with Jono batting really well and Ritchie (Turner) is in amazing form at the moment.
"He seems to get off to a flyer every week which has been really good."
Wagga City then had Lake Albert in plenty of trouble before the rain came.
The Bulls were down to 4-74 after Adam Newcombe (28) was removed by Thompson just before the heavens opened.
Thompson was disappointed not to see the innings through but is happy to take the points into the top-of-the-table clash with South Wagga next Saturday.
"Once it started raining it kept raining the whole time so it was good to have the runs on the board and to be in front," Thompson said.
"We will take the points but it doesn't really feel like a win.
"A washout doesn't necessarily feel like a win but it is just good to be in front when those sort of things happen."
The result cuts unbeaten South Wagga's advantage to two points at the top of the ladder after they were in a dominant position against Wagga RSL but fell three overs short of the required 20 for a match.
Thompson believes the grand final rematch will be a good guide on the side's form with their only loss so far coming against the Blues.
However he still believes there is plenty of improvement to come.
"We definitely bowled and fielded better than last week but there is still heaps of areas to improve on.
"We're not bowling consistent enough and not putting six good balls together so that is something we will have to look at and try to work towards," Thompson said.
