The mural features a majestic Yellow Rosella, a subspecies of bird that is native to the Murrumbidgee area.
Painter David Cragg and his partner Karla Hayes have been working gruelling 10-12 hour shifts over the last week, and are hoping to put the finishing touches to the mural on Thursday.
Mr Cragg said the mural was already bringing smiles to the faces of pedestrians, who were glad to see a dash of colour during these dark times.
"Every third person is telling us how much they enjoy it and how much they love that Wagga's getting something bright and colourful on the main street," Mr Cragg said.
"All day we've had cars and passersby yell up at us to ask for a photo. It's been great."
In other news:
Ms Hayes said the two of them shored up each other's weaknesses, with Mr Cragg doing the intricate spray painting while she focused on the brushwork.
"It has to be said: he's the absolute gun on the spray cans," Ms Hayes said.
"The parrot's all David's work. It's pretty amazing."
The mural was commissioned by Wagga City Council off the back of a state government grant as part of a initiative to bring some cheeriness to the post-pandemic streets.
