A plaque for John Mason, the recipient Wagga 2020 Walk of Honour, was officially unveiled on Friday at Baylis Street.
The imitative was instigated in 1998 to recognise substantial contributors to the community.
Mr Mason said he was extremely humbled by the gesture, and would treasure it forever.
"I am feeling fairly emotional, it is hard to explain," he said.
"I am not the person who really likes to be stuck in the limelight. However, it is what it is and I am very pleased and grateful to the city of Wagga."
Mr Mason said he's always loved building things, and it made sense to use that passion in ways to better help the community.
Wagga mayor Greg Conkey said he was thrilled to see Mr Mason become the 36th inductee.
"John is a long-term member of the South Wagga Rotary Club and the Wagga Men's Shed," Cr Conkey said.
"When a family in need reached out to Rotary requiring assistance with their family home, John volunteered.

"This project quickly turned into the rebuild of half their house with John taking on the role of coordinating and seeing the project to completion."
His daughter, Jan Mason, said her father had a long history in service and has always been very community-focused.
"That's what Dad's life was like. He's a very generous man, and we knew how hard he'd worked on it, never expecting any recognition," Ms Mason said.
"When he was nominated for the Australia Day Walk of Honour, he was very much 'there are so many more people doing so many more amazing things; it shouldn't be me. It was just something I did'.
"We're all very proud of him and of what he's done for his entire life."
