The Beer-trained Redouble looked the winner heading into the final 100 metres but was grabbed by $2.00 favourite It's Me in the final stages to go down by a long head.
The Riverina-owned Man Of Peace, who was formerly trained by Dave Heywood, gave a huge sight in front and held on for third place.
The winner, It's Me, is trained by former Albury horseman Brett Cavanough, who is now based at Scone.
Lord Von Costa, for Donna Scott and Blaike McDougall, ran 11th and was beaten 3.3 lengths.
There was no joy for the William Farrer Hotel's Super Punters Club (SPC) with Prairie Fire only beating the one runner home, finishing 13th.
Corowa sprinter Front Page, who was set to represent the SPC, was sensationally scratched on Friday when he was injured 30 minutes into his float trip.
Redouble earned $260,000 for running second, which will be split between connections and the slot holders.
"I know we didn't win but it certainly doesn't feel like that," Beer said.
"Big Dubs, he's done us proud, he's done Albury proud, I've never been more over the moon to run second in my life. We got beat by a better one on the day but the support and the well wishes from everyone have been nothing but outstanding.
"I'm over the moon. The stable have done such a good job at such an average time over the last few months and big Dubs has done us proud."
The Phil Sweeney-trained Mr Moppett was the best of the Southern District pair in the Highway, finishing sixth as a beaten favourite.
