The NSW Sand Green Championships return to the town, featuring more than 90 competitors from across the state in fierce battle for the title.
Mitchell O'Brien, who plays off a handicap of one at Coolamon, leads the local hopes.
He's a former winner, sharing the honours in 2005 when the state championships were last held in Coolamon.
Brian Harris from Wagga Country Club is also considered a strong hope, along with Coolamon's reigning club champion, Greg McKelvie, and Lockhart's Michael Manyan, who won the Riverina sand green championships.
"The course is fantastic. It should cater for very, very low scores," Coolamon golf club's Mick O'Brien said.
"I wouldn't be surprised if the course record is broken this weekend. The ground staff has got the place looking immaculate.
"It looks like Royal Coolamon, not Coolamon.
"Even the three or four millimetres of rain we got (on Thursday night) just put a tinge of green to it."
Run by NSW Golf, the event is a 36-hole strokeplay championship played over two days and open to amateur golfers with a handicap of 27.4 or under.
"This is the third time we've hosted it," O'Brien said.
"It rotates. Next year it's back up at Nyngan, so it does get around and it's just trying to work out who's the best sand green player in NSW each year."
O'Brien said Golf NSW officials have been in the town for a couple of days to prepare for the state championship and "have been thrilled with the way the course has been presented."
All groups have morning tee times with play on both days to wrap up by mid afternoon.
