The front rower re-aggravated an adductor issue and put a cloud over his future this season. the Tigers extended their unbeaten start to the season with a 16-6 win over Junee.
However after impressing with a 38-0 win over Southcity last season, the Tigers were far from the same side at Laurie Daley Oval on Saturday.
Coach Adam Perry is looking for a big improvement when they tackle Tumut at Anzac Park on Saturday to claim the minor premiership.
"We didn't play as well as we did last week so we will need to improve if we want to give Tumut a shake next week," Perry said.
"It felt like we made a lot more errors than we had done in previous week and it felt a bit clunky.
"We definitely didn't play as well as we can or we have been."
Dropped ball was a far too prevalent feature in a clash that failed to reach too many lofty standards.
Gundagai jumped out to an early lead when Jack Elphick crossed after seven minutes before tries to Jake Elphick and Jack Lyons handed the ladder leaders a 12-0 lead at half-time.
Junee responded when Dakota Ruta crossed 14 minutes into the second half but Gundagai were quick to hit back as Charlie Barton made the most of his return to first grade to score.
James Luff had an uncustomary poor day with the boot, failing to convert any of his team's four tries.
Gundagai also went into the clash without star centre Mathew Lyons after he dislocated a knuckle last week.
Perry was pleased with how the forced back line changes worked.
"Jack Elphick didn't do too bad a job and both him and Charlie Barton played well," he said.
Lyons is expected to be right to face Tumut in the battle for the minor premiership at Anzac Park.
However Berkrey is a much bigger concern after failing to play out his first game in five weeks.
Meanwhile Junee will look to finish a disappointing season on a high when they travel to face Young in the final round of the season.
