The Wanderers suffered a 5-1 loss at the hands of Canberra Olympic at Gissing Oval, with former Matildas star Ashleigh Sykes scoring a double for the visitors.
Wagga City Wanderers women's manager Gary Lyons said it was a tough day at the office for the home team.
"It was a pretty tough game. The Canberra Olympic side has a few very high quality players in it, ex-Matildas et cetera," Lyons said.
"Our squad today, we've got quality players and they play with a lot of heart but being such a new team still, there is still a lot of room for the team to grow.
"We had our chances and ended up putting one goal away against them. We did a fair bit of scrambling in defence.
"The second half, the girls regrouped and it was a goal apiece in the second half. The girls, they did improve but they got caught on the back foot early and took a while to regroup after that."
Brandy Nicholson was the standout for the Wanderers and she capped off a great game with her team's only goal.
Maddie Harris and Lisa Cary also enjoyed strong games.
In other games from Sunday, the Wanderers' under 15 team won 3-0 and the 17s enjoyed a 4-0 win.
The under 13s lost 5-0, while reserve grade went down 3-1.
