The Bureau of Meteorology recorded a total of 21.6mm rain for Wagga overnight, forecast to continue throughout the day and into Friday.
While still a way off record-breaking figures, Wagga's BoM technical officer Nigel Smedley said it has been an above average month of rain.
"So far for the month of April, Wagga has had 90.4mm of rain, which is normally an average of 39.6mm," he said.
"We're also 33mm above the average total for the year so far, having received 198.4mm."
Junee farmer John Higginson just finished checking his three rain gauges, and was met with a positive reading.
"We had 18mm overnight and another 6mm yesterday," he said.
"On Saturday, we got more than the 1-5mm forecast too and recorded 9mm plus more overnight which is really good to see."
The soaking was a relief to the farmer, who said the rain would set them up for a promising winter.
"We don't normally get a good autumn break like this in the area, so it's great and will hopefully take us through the winter," Mr Higginson said.
NSW Farmers Wagga district branch chairman Alan Brown was also reaping the benefits.
"This is the best autumn I've ever seen, it's the ideal set up because the rain has been really soft so far and really has time to sink in, it's fantastic," he said.
In other news:
Mr Brown said he recorded about 40mm of rain yesterday and overnight, following on from a wet weekend.
However, there were certain down sides.
"The cold temperatures are causing a bit of trouble for some farmers, but we only hope this will set us up for a good winter," Mr Brown said.
Mr Smedley said the forecast over the next few months are also looking to be wet.
"We will have wetter than average months ahead from May to July, but also warmer temperatures over that period too," he said.
