The work - at the intersection of the highway and Tumbarumba Road - includes installing a left turn lane, widening the road shoulders and removing trees, as well as upgrades to lighting and line markings.
Work starts on Friday and will take place from 7am to 5pm weekdays and between 7am and 1pm on Saturdays.
It is expected to be complete by the end of March, weather permitting.
A Transport for NSW spokesman said traffic control, single lane closures and reduced speed limits will be in place for the safety of workers and motorists.
"Motorists are advised to allow up to 10 minutes extra travel time to their journey while work is under way," the spokesman said.
"Transport for NSW thanks motorists for their patience during this time."
