As line-marking was being completed, broadcast trucks setting up and the city preparing for AFL clubs Greater Western Sydney and Richmond, the playing surface looked a picture.
"The venue's come up really well. Even though we had the great rain during the week it hasn't done the surface any harm at all," Wagga City Council's Ben Creighton said.
"We've had really favourable feedback on the surface condition this week so we're quite confident heading into the game."
Creighton said it's a credit to the drainage at Robertson Oval and the ground staff, who have also been in close contact with the AFL for months.
Saturday's game is free entry. Around 5000 tickets have so far been sold for Sunday. Council is encouraging spectators to make use of free buses to the ground after the wet weather forced the closure of parking on Bolton Park's sporting fields.
"We won't be complaining about the rain. It's obviously a very positive thing for the entire region," Creighton said.
"We do ask people to think about how they're going to get here... we're encouraging people to park in and around the city and use the free bus service. If they can't do that, they can park within the CBD and walk."
Council says the free buses will run regularly from pick-up points at Wagga Beach carpark and the Cross Street carpark on both days. On Sunday, there will be additional services from Kooringal, Tolland and Southcity shopping centres.
Creighton said hosting the double-header is a privilege for Wagga.
"It's enormously exciting. To have an AFLW match here for the first time is enormous for the city," he said.
"But not only that, we look forward to the teams that are coming here for the AFL pre-season game on Sunday. It's pretty much all the stars playing from both teams so it's going to be a great spectacle."
