Tony's Rescue was one of the quickest heat winner last week, but has come up with box seven in the $10,000-to-the-winner heat.
Kamikaze Cowlick was far by the quickest qualifier, with Andrew Mulrine's bitch clocking 25.73 seconds and has drawn the coveted one box.
Tony's Rescue went 26.12 but McDonald was just pleased to see him bounce back from an uncharacteristic run at Bathurst leading into Temora's feature.
"We are going to need a lot of luck, but he's in the race and he's a chance," McDonald said.
"His run before at Bathurst was very ordinary and I actually contemplated scratching him but he shocked me and won."
McDonald still isn't sure what when wrong at Bathurst, but thought he might have jarred up on the surface.
"Other than the Bathurst run he gives 100 per cent," he said.
"It's got me baffled."
The Cowra trainer is also wary of another heat winner Bit Flash for Michael Clayton.
McDonald rates Dana Ali his best chance of the night after drawing one Molly Harmer Final (330m).
She was third in her heat but with a larger gap between races, and the gun, he expects a better performance.
"I think she will be very hard to beat," McDonald said. "She should go a little bit better with a full week in between runs."
