After it proved hugely popular in Port Macquarie last year, a working party will meet on Monday to discuss the merit of introducing a 'Super Nines' concept.
The competition would be played by nine player teams across nine-minute thirds, with players allocated to each team drawn randomly.
"We only have four first grade clubs and the players say they probably play each other a bit too often and want something different with a bit more variety," Wagga Hockey president Ken Irvine said.
"It was trialed very successfully in Port Macquarie and they're running with the concept again.
"I'd like it to happen, I think it's an opportunity to see a different form of hockey.
"They play nines at state level in most cases, it's fast and there's a couple of different rules like no penalty corners.
"We've got few challenges to talk about and we'll resolve that on Monday."
If the competition goes ahead, it will be introduced alongside the traditional men's and women's leagues which will continue unaffected.
It is yet to be determined whether the league would be run as a mid-week competition or on the weekend on stand-alone weekends.
