Clad in a black Ecko United shirt, long pants and a ribbed balaclava covering his face, a man is seen running into the Bourke Street service station, waving a knife at the attendant.
The attendant standing behind the counter can be seen jumping back, raising his hands as the attacker runs menacingly towards him.
The robber demanded cash and cigarettes, police said, and the attendant complied, emptying the till.
The CCTV released by police reveals him methodically stashing bundles of notes into specific compartments in what appears to be an otherwise empty green and grey coloured Ocean & Earth backpack.
The entire ordeal lasted just 27 seconds.
Chilling footage from just prior to the robbery clearly shows the man pulling the knife from the backpack as he runs around the side of the shop, pulling up only to let the automatic door open.

The manhunt for the violent attacker - who has been on the run since the robbery at 8.30pm on Sunday, October 13 - continues.
"The individual has fled on foot after the attendant complied and handed over a quantity of cash, and was seen running off from the service station," said Detective Inspector Phil Malligan.
He is described as being of Caucasian appearance and around 180cm tall, with a skinny build.
He was wearing a black long-sleeved shirt with a white filigree Echo United motif, black trousers, black shoes and a black and grey striped balaclava.
At the time of the attack, he was carrying a green and grey 'Ocean and Earth' backpack.
