The Riverina Highlands RFS has warned those in the area of Tooma Road that they need to be prepared.

"There is a heightened level of threat, conditions are changing and you need to start taking action now," the RFS said on Tuesday afternoon.

"There is active fire in the area, community members need to remain vigilant. Monitor conditions and know what you will do if the fire threatens.

"Activate your bushfire survival plan. Only well-prepared homes provide the or offer the best protection. Leaving early is the safest option."

The Dunns Road bushfire alone has burned through more than 338,000 hectares, and merged with several other large fires on Friday night to form a fireground almost twice that size.

The blaze is currently increasing in the Tumbarumba area, and also still burning around Ellerslie and south of Goobarragandra.

The RFS had earlier in the day advised that firefighters were focusing on containing "fire activity" to the south of Tumbarumba in the Mt Farland area, and that smoke fro backburning should be expected.

It urged people considering returning to to the town that it was safer to stay away until the fire was under controlled and services returned to normal.
