Sutherland finished third with 2017 cup winner Gentleman Max, who was having his 100th start in the feature race, while My Maher finished fourth.
Steamin' charged through late to win the $32,000 feature for Wellington trainer Michael Mullholland and Greg Ryan.
However Real Key justified his $1.85 favourite's tag with a half length victory in the City Gold Ken Mathers Memorial Benchmark 58 Hcp (1400m).
It was part of a double for the region's leading jockey Blaike McDougall.
He also rode Away She Goes to victory for Canberra trainer Luke Pepper.
Sutherland also finished third with Extra Cool and Benno's Boy across the eight-race card.
