The Wagga Prostate Cancer Support Group is one of many throughout Australia providing support for men and their families who have been diagnosed with prostate cancer.
The Wagga group was started in 2001 following a very well attended public meeting.
The original role of the group is to provide support to men and their families who have been diagnosed with prostate cancer. Peer support following diagnosis is very important as it can help to allay some of the fears that come with diagnosis.
This role has expanded to creating awareness amongst the community of the importance of getting annual blood tests that can identify prostate cancer early and, raising funds for these awareness activities.
The group has been supported by various groups in Wagga including Rotary and the Biggest Ever Blokes Lunch who generously donate money to allow awareness work to continue.
Support from the Biggest Ever Blokes Lunch enabled the Prostate Nursing Scholarships to be created. The scholarship provides an opportunity for registered nurses to advance their knowledge and skills in prostate cancer nursing.
Anyone who has been diagnosed with prostate cancer is welcome at meetings. They are held twice monthly at Lilier Lodge.
Evening: Second Thursday each month at 7pm Ph Kym 0478 640376 for information.
Day: Last Tuesday each month at 10am Ph Christine 0467 715513 for information.
