Berkrey came off late in the 36-14 win over Junee on Sunday and while scans cleared the 26-year-old of initial fears of another break he's unsure how long he'll be sidelined for.
"I was in a fair bit of pain after the game and I've had trouble with now it for ages," Berkrey said.
"There are so many different things that can go on now because of the breaks that have been in it, it is hard to tell straight away but there was no crack."
Gundagai are yet to taste defeat this season, winning six straight games after a draw with Albury to start the season.
However they face their two biggest tests to date in their next two games against the other two sides in the top three.
They tackle Southcity, who have also won their last six games, at Anzac Park on Sunday before the grudge match against Tumut at Twickenham following the general bye.
Berkrey is no stranger to sternum problems, having first cracked it playing with Cootamundra in 2013 and again with Queanbeyan Blues three years later, but it hasn't really been an issue since his first game for the Tigers at the 2017 West Wyalong Knockout.
With a crack ruled out, he's hoping it won't be too big of a problem.
"I've had other injury around it as my rib cage is really loose now and a rib can just pop out onto my sternum and that is where I get the pain until the rib gets popped back in.
"My doctor just won't touch me as it is too sensitive and said we've just got to let it heal."
Berkrey even struggled to lie down hours after the win over the Diesels but wouldn't rule himself out of the grand final rematch with the Bulls.
"If it is just a rib I can pop it back over off it and is basically instant relief but I don't know if it feels like that," he said.
"I think there is something else going on but you don't know for three or four days after."
It shapes as a big couple of weeks for the premiers who then travel to take to the border to take on the Thunder.
