The typically seasonal disease has caught the city's vets by surprise who anticipate more cases during the warmer months.
Wagga Veterinary Hospital practice principal Tristan Robinson believes the recent rainfall might be responsible for the spike.
"Historically, we see a spike in cases after a rain event. Personally, I have noticed more flies after warm weather and the moisture of the rain has helped spread the disease," he said.
In the past two weeks, Dr Robinson has seen "half a dozen" of dogs come back with positive tests.
"Six cases at one time is not surprising, but because it is out of season that has caused the alarm," he said.
Dr Robinson said owners should have their puppies vaccinated three times at monthly intervals during the first four months of life.
